A brief history of a long-established name in property.

1826

FIRM ESTABLISHED

Watkins & Stephenson Partnership.

1877

STEPHENSON & ALEXANDER

W P Stephenson and D T Alexander enter into partnership.

1885

NEW HEAD

Following the death of W P Stephenson, D T Alexander becomes head of the firm.

1900

ALEXANDER’S SONS JOIN

John and Hubert Alexander join S&A.

1921

CHANGING OF THE GUARD

D T Alexander continued practising up to his death thereafter his sons take over the reins.

1945

NEW RECRUITS

Hubert’s son Duncan rejoins the firm as a partner and Duncan’s younger brother Peter joins in the 1950’s.

1954

FAMILY CONTINUITY

Duncan and Peter Alexander head up the firm joined by William (Bill) Hunt in the late 1960’s.

1960’s to 1980’s

SCALING UP

S&A expands with a full suite of services in all sectors. New team members join including Hugh James and David Davies.

1995

UNTIMELY PASSING

Peter Graham joins from DTZ as a 50/50 partner with David Davies, following the sad death of his Brother-in-law, Hugh James and departure of Anthony Alexander.

1995 - 2007

OPENING OF STEPHENSON & ALEXANDER’S OFFICE AT 16 HANOVER SQUARE, LONDON

Jonathan Baines (now at London International Investment) heads the London office.Contemporary influential real estate professionals join including David Burgess, Robert Chapman (RC2), Dan Evans & James Sanders (Powell Lloyd), Tristan Hobbs (Interstrand) and Dominic Ball (Montagu Evans).

2008-2014

HEADWINDS

After a long recessionary period, Peter Graham joins Gerald Eve as Investment Partner and closes the doors at S&A.

The Team

Dan Tompkinson

BSc (Hons) Dip LE MRICS

Dan is a Director and General Practice Surveyor based in Cardiff specialising in valuation, lease consultancy and investment advisory.

Experienced in valuation of retail, office, industrial and specialist/alternative property assets for loan security, financial reporting, transactional support and internal management purposes.

Loan security reporting to Lloyds Bank, Principality Building Society, Barclays Bank, Santander, Handelsbanken, Bank of Singapore, Arbuthnot Latham and Aldermore Bank.

Lease consultancy advice to several major occupiers including Co-operative Group, WH Smith, Bestway/Well pharmacy, Costa, Pizza Express, Boots and Wolseley.

National and International experience advising clients on assets across the UK, Central Eastern Europe and Africa including disposal and acquisition of office and retail investments; regular portfolio valuations for property funds managed by Axa, Quintain Estates and Developments, ING Real Estate, CA Immo and Immo Finanz; and portfolio asset management for private investors.

A member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors since 1995.

Paul Beaton

B.SC(HONS) MRICS

Providing valuations of commercial and residential properties, expert witness reports, rent reviews, specialist valuations, and various other property-related issues.

Paul joined Astleys in 1997 after qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor and become Partner in 2002. Paul’s experience has been within a wide range of property types throughout Wales.

Sean Thomas

B.SC(HONS) MRICS

Director, Head of Commercial Agency and RICS Registered Valuer

With over 15 years’ experience and 12 years post qualification as a Chartered Surveyor, Sean deals with all aspects of commercial property and currently runs the Commercial Agency Department, covering the South and West Wales Region.

Appointed as Director in 2016, Sean also is responsible for the performance of the residential agency offices. Sean also deals with a range of property and land acquisitions working with a number of local and national clients.

Sean is an RICS Registered Valuer undertaking a range of valuations including Private Valuations, Commercial and Residential Mortgage Valuations and Self-Invested Personal Pension Valuations.

Matt Barry

HEAD OF ESTATE AGENCY

Matt first joined Astleys in 2012 and started as a sales negotiator at our busy Morriston branch, before being promoted to valuer in 2014 and then going on to become the branch manager at our Mumbles office in 2015 where he became well established in the local community.

Matt was then appointed as a director in 2021 and is responsible for the residential agency side of the business. He has a great passion for property and strives to make sure we are continually providing our clients with the highest levels of service.

Alex De Melverda

MRICS

Director, Head of Residential Professional Services Department and RICS registered Valuer

Highly experienced in mortgage valuations, private valuations and surveys for a variety of clients throughout South and West Wales. Alex joined Astleys in 2016 from Colleys Property Surveyors (part of the Lloyds Banking Group).

With over 6 years post qualification as a Chartered Surveyor, Alex quickly became an integral member of the firm and was shortly appointed as Director and Head of Residential Professional Services in 2018.
